The road west from Lisbon leads into a remarkably diverse landscape. The Serra de Sintra, with its forested hills, granite peaks and extraordinary palaces, rises above the Atlantic before the coastline reaches Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. From here, the route continues to Cascais, Portugal’s elegant seaside resort, before returning to Lisbon along the scenic Marginal coastal road.

This Sintra and Cascais private tour from Lisbon departs your hotel at 09:00, travelling first to Sintra. Explore the historic centre, its cobbled streets, traditional shops and atmospheric squares while your driver-guide introduces the history of this UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

For those wishing to experience one of Sintra’s famous palaces, timed entry can be arranged in advance. Choose between the colourful towers of Pena Palace, the mysterious gardens and Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira, or the exotic architecture and botanical gardens of Monserrate. Palace admission is optional and extends the programme.

After lunch in Sintra, continue through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to Cabo da Roca. Standing high above the Atlantic, this dramatic headland marks the westernmost point of mainland Europe and offers spectacular coastal views.

The afternoon continues to Cascais, where you can explore the marina, Cidadela fortress, historic centre and waterfront at your own pace. The return to Lisbon follows the Marginal coastal road, passing the Atlantic beaches and elegant coastline towards the capital.

1. Which palace do you recommend?

It depends on the group. Pena Palace is the most visually dramatic — the coloured towers above the forest canopy are the defining image of Sintra and the views from the battlements over the Atlantic are extraordinary. Quinta da Regaleira is the most atmospheric — the neo-Manueline estate with its underground initiatic well and labyrinthine gardens suits clients who want something more mysterious and less conventional. Monserrate is the most serene — the Moorish-Gothic palace surrounded by botanical gardens is the least crowded of the three and rewards clients who value depth over spectacle. 2. Is Cabo da Roca worth the stop or is it just a viewpoint?

It is a viewpoint — and one of the finest in Europe. The westernmost point of continental Europe, with a 140-metre drop to the Atlantic below and nothing between you and the Americas on the horizon, is not a stop that requires embellishment. The Camões verse engraved at the site — "Here where the land ends and the sea begins" — has been there since 1515 in various forms and remains the most precise description of the place. Allow 30–40 minutes. It earns them.

3. How much time do we have in Cascais?

Approximately two and a half hours — enough for the marina walk, the Cidadela fortress exterior, the old town lanes, a café stop, and the beachfront promenade. Cascais is a town that rewards slow walking, and two hours is the minimum to appreciate it properly. Your driver is at liberty while you explore independently. 4. Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. MBV.TRAVEL selects and pre-books a table at a curated restaurant in Sintra — the reservation is handled, the meal is at your own expense. Sintra has a strong restaurant scene at the premium end; the pre-booked table ensures you are not left searching during the busiest part of the day.

5. What vehicle will we travel in?
