The Serra da Arrábida is a limestone ridge running along the southern coast of the Setúbal Peninsula, dropping sharply into the Atlantic in a series of cliffs, coves, and beaches of extraordinary clarity. The morning begins at the Convento da Arrábida — a 16th-century Franciscan monastery built into the cliff face above the sea, still inhabited, and one of the most dramatically situated buildings in Portugal. The Serra ridge road follows — a narrow coastal route through the protected natural park, with limestone peaks above and the Atlantic below.
