Your private day trip departs from your Geneva hotel at 08:30, travelling through the scenic Fribourg Pre-Alps, where limestone peaks, green valleys and traditional dairy farms create the landscape behind some of Switzerland’s most celebrated cheeses.

Arrive in Gruyères, one of Switzerland’s most picturesque medieval villages, dramatically positioned above the surrounding valley. Begin at La Maison du Gruyère, the famous cheese dairy at the foot of the village. See how Gruyère AOP cheese is produced and enjoy a tasting featuring different stages of maturation.

Continue into the historic village of Gruyères, where you can explore the charming pedestrian streets and visit Château de Gruyères, a remarkable medieval castle dating from the 13th century. Enjoy lunch at one of the village’s traditional restaurants before continuing to nearby Broc.

The next stop is Maison Cailler, one of Switzerland’s oldest chocolate manufacturers. Discover the history and craftsmanship behind Swiss chocolate through an immersive experience, followed by a tasting of Cailler’s renowned creations.

In the afternoon, continue to Montreux, the glamorous jewel of the Lake Geneva Riviera. Stroll along its flower-filled lakeside promenade, admire the views across the lake and Alps, and see the famous Freddie Mercury statue. Montreux was home to the Queen frontman during the final years of his life and remains closely associated with the band’s recording history.

Return to Geneva at approximately 18:30.

Both are among the most child-friendly experiences in Switzerland. La Maison du Gruyère makes the cheese production process visually engaging and accessible, and the Maison Cailler tasting room is universally popular with younger travellers. 3. What is the connection between Freddie Mercury and Montreux?

The Queen frontman moved to Montreux in the 1980s, drawn by the recording studios and the privacy the town afforded. The Mountain Studios above the town hosted numerous Queen recordings. Mercury described Montreux as one of the places where he could simply live — the statue on the lakeside promenade, installed after his death in 1991, has since become one of the most visited monuments in Switzerland.

4. What is the best time of year to visit Gruyères and Montreux?

Both destinations work in every season. Spring and summer offer the most dramatic Alpine backdrop and the Montreux promenade at its flower-filled best. Autumn brings the colours: the vineyards turn gold and amber against the blue of the lake, with the Alps above and the water below. One of the finest seasonal landscapes in Switzerland. Winter in Gruyères, with the medieval village under snow and the castle illuminated, is genuinely beautiful. The Montreux Jazz Festival in July transforms the town — worth experiencing or avoiding depending on your preference for crowds.
