Depart your Geneva hotel at 08:00 for a spectacular journey into the heart of the Swiss Alps. The drive to Täsch, the gateway to Zermatt, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, with changing landscapes along the way, from the shores of Lake Geneva to Alpine valleys and mountain peaks.

From Täsch, continue by shuttle train into Zermatt, Switzerland’s famous car-free mountain village. Surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps, Zermatt offers an exceptional combination of Alpine scenery, traditional architecture, elegant hotels, boutiques, and mountain restaurants.

Once in Zermatt, enjoy time to explore the village at your own pace. Wander along its charming streets, discover the historic old village, browse local boutiques, or pause for lunch with spectacular mountain views.

For an enhanced experience, your Zermatt day trip includes the Gornergrat Railway for one of Switzerland’s most spectacular panoramic journeys, or ascend by cable car towards Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe’s highest cable-car station (depending on the weather conditions). From the summit, 38 peaks above 4,000 metres are visible simultaneously — including Monte Rosa (4,634m, the highest point in Switzerland), the Weisshorn, the Dom, and the Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn dominates the landscape throughout the experience, offering extraordinary opportunities for photography and one of the defining views of Switzerland.

In the afternoon, return by train from Zermatt to Täsch, where your private vehicle is parked for the journey back to Geneva.

Return to Geneva in the evening.

FAQs

1. What is the best time of year to visit Zermatt and see the Matterhorn clearly?
The Matterhorn is visible year-round but clarity depends entirely on weather. The clearest conditions are typically in autumn (September–October) and in stable high-pressure winter periods. Summer (July–August) brings afternoon cloud build-up that can obscure the summit by midday. Spring snow conditions (April–May) offer dramatic photography. MBV.TRAVEL monitors forecasts and will advise on likely visibility before departure.
2. Is the Gornergrat altitude safe for all passengers?
The Gornergrat summit at 3,089 metres is accessible by railway without physical exertion, making it manageable for most visitors. Some passengers may experience mild altitude effects — light-headedness, slight breathlessness — particularly those with cardiovascular conditions or respiratory sensitivities. Children and fit adults typically have no issues. If you or a member of your group has health concerns, consult a doctor before booking. The railway descent takes 33 minutes if an early return is needed.
3. Is Zermatt really car-free?
Yes — Zermatt has been car-free since 1930. Private vehicles are not permitted beyond Täsch, where MBV.TRAVEL’s vehicle parks and the transfer to the mountain railway begins. Within Zermatt, transport is by electric taxi, horse-drawn carriage, or on foot. The absence of cars is one of the defining characteristics of the village — it contributes significantly to the Alpine atmosphere that makes Zermatt unlike any other Swiss resort.
4. What vehicle will we travel in?
A premium private vehicle — Sedan (up to 3 passengers) or Mercedes-Benz minivan (up to 8 passengers), air-conditioned. Your driver will confirm the vehicle at booking.
5. Do you have more questions or want to customise the itinerary?
Please get in touch and we’ll answer everything. MBV.TRAVEL builds private itineraries — the standard programme is a strong starting point, but the pace, stops, and sequence can all be adjusted to suit your group. Contact us before booking to discuss your specific requirements.
